WE HAVE LEVEY PRIDE!
Thank you so much for your interest in Levey Day School. When you choose Levey you become a part of an extraordinary community of parents who are committed to providing the best for their child. It is the most important investment you will make for your child. And, for those reasons, I am both humbled and honored to serve as Head of School.
With the very strong support of engaged and committed parents, a terrific and very talented team of teachers, and an enthusiastic Board of Trustees, Levey opened its doors for our 67th year in the Fall of 2018 to a new and powerful optimism, a renewed energy, and a purposeful program that meets learners where they are ready to learn and provides a rich, rewarding, challenging and connected curriculum.
I looked at Levey through two lenses when I interviewed for this position: as an administrator/educator looking for my next role and as a parent. Just like you, we were in search for a “right fit” school. Now, as proud parents of a current Levey kindergartener, my wife, Tracey, and I were so happy to get a great sense of the connection the teachers have with students. Here, the engagement that our students have with the adults who care for them every day is second to none. It’s palpable. It is one of the major difference makers for the school. Our small student body and incredible student-teacher ratio enables our teachers to really know every student in the school, not just those students in their own classroom. Plus, Levey’s commitment to 21st century competencies played a big role in our decision. Like you, we want our child to be inquisitive and to know how to learn, not just what to learn. We want him engaged in and out of the classroom, sensitive to others’ opinions, but strong in character to stand up for his beliefs. We want him to acquire and nurture those skills which will allow him to be a life long, independent learner. Most importantly, we want him to have great compassion for others and be a kind, caring upstander for friends and peers. We want him to learn about and respect others’ cultures unlike his own, and be a part of a community that looks like the real world. For all those reasons we made the best decision: Levey.
So I hope you see and feel what we saw and felt when we walked through those doors. We are Portland’s hidden gem — a place where students are provided the tools and resources necessary to question, explore and investigate. As Levey’s new Head of School, I see great promise at our small school, a place where magic happens inside and outside of the classrooms every day.
