Congratulations to fifth grader Kaia Isajar, May’s Code of Kavod Student of the Month

Fifth grader, Kaia Isajar consistently demonstrates kindness and consideration toward her peers and others. She works hard at everything she does, both in the classroom and out on the playground.

Levey’s Code of Kavod, (Kavod is the Hebrew word for honor), is the set of rules and ideals for behavior by which all Levey students, teachers and parents strive to live. Each month during the school year Levey teachers name one or two students that have exemplified the Code of Kavod for the past month.

First grader Charlotte Schatz and third grader Nathan Isajar are April’s Kode of Kavod Students of the Month

Charlotte Schatz is a great role model in our first grade class, always putting her best effort into all she does. She can be found listening intently to our lessons or surrounded by colored pencils while she puts the finishing touches on her literacy log responses. She is also one to take on a challenge to further her learning. When a classmate or teacher needs help, she is always the first one to happily step in. Charlotte is a very kind, compassionate and respectful friend to all!

Nathan Isajar, a third grader, is a true ambassador to our school when we have visiting prospective students. He goes out of his way to be friendly, helpful and to engage them in conversation and activities. He is also the first person to help someone clean up a spill or to check in on an upset or hurt schoolmate. In addition, he has worked really hard on improving his sportsmanlike behavior and has made notable progress in both the classroom and at recess.

Come join Levey Day School parents and students at a screening of the documentary short film, The Jewish Community, directed by Rebecca Wohl-Pollack. Featuring one-on-one interviews with members of Southern Maine’s Jewish community – students at Levey Hebrew Day School, religious leaders and other community members – who share their unique interpretations of the religion and culture. An inside look into what it means to be Jewish in Southern Maine, this film will leave you smiling!

After the film, there will be a Q&A session with the filmmaker, followed by a panel discussion about the Jewish Community within Levey, and the role that Levey Day School can and should play within the greater Jewish Community of Portland and Southern Maine. Wine and cheese will be served for adults, snacks and a separate activity will be organized for kids. The event is free, with a suggested donation of $10 per adult to benefit Levey Day School.

Jamie Cluchey – Director of Levey Day School

After a nationwide search, the Levey Day School is delighted to announce the appointment of Jamie Cluchey as Director, starting July 1, 2012. She comes to Levey from her position as a teacher in the South Portland Schools.

A graduate of Mt. Holyoke College, she received her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Brown University and has recently completed the Leaders for Tomorrow’s Schools program through USM. Throughout her education and career, her practice has reflected her strong belief in the value and power of experiential education.

A native of Cape Elizabeth, she became a Bat Mitzvah and went through confirmation at Congregation Bet Ha’am and is currently a member of Etz Chaim Synagogue in Portland.

Levey Day School Board President Elizabeth Rosen was honored by JCA President Ben Marcus

At the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Jewish Community Alliance (JCA) Levey Day School Board President Elizabeth Rosen was honored with The President’s Award – in recognition of her service to the community for acting as Interim Director of the school.

JCA President Ben Marcus noted that “The President’s Award is given out from time to time, at the President’s discretion, to a person whose service to the Jewish Community Alliance is outstanding.”

The Levey community congratulates Elizabeth for this honor.

Southern Maine’s Israel Independence Day Community Celebration and Concert

Please join Southern Maine’s Jewish community in celebrating Yom Ha’atzmaut – Israel Independence Day – with Israel-themed treats, games, activities and folk-dancing, followed by a concert featuring the Yeshiva University’s world – famous A Capella group The Maccabeats. All are welcome.
