It’s North meets South, as good food and great friends come together for Levey Day School’s 4th annual Holy Smokes! Kosher BBQ.
This year, we will honor Levey alum parents Sharon and Perry Newman, long-time supporters of our school and Portland’s Jewish community. They have served as volunteers, advocates and ambassadors and have enriched and impacted many in Southern Maine and the Boston area with their spirit and dedication.
The event, which is open to the public, kicks off at 5pm with a cocktail reception, and features music from Portland’s own high-energy bluegrass band Jerks of Grass.
This true foodie event is Levey’s major fundraiser of the year, supporting Maine and Northern New England’s only Jewish Day School. Guests will enjoy live bluegrass music, as they enjoy kosher BBQ brisket, slow-cooked in a custom-made kosher smoker. The meal also features chicken and vegetarian entrées, all vegetarian sides and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Guests will also be invited to bid on silent auction items.
Auction Items include: vacation stays, artwork, Disney and sporting event tickets, summer camp discounts, memberships, restaurant gift cards, and more!
“The Holy Smokes Barbecue brings the whole community together in support of a small school that makes a big difference,” says Gerri Chizeck, Levey’s Head of School.
“Portland is a great foodie town, and has a thriving and diverse Jewish community,” says Karl Schatz, Vice President of Levey’s Board of Directors. “This fun and exciting community event brings those two worlds together.”
“Levey Day School has been at the front and center of Jewish education in Greater Portland for more than 60 years. The education and values that I learned there have shaped my life from first grade right up until today,” says Levey Alumnus Rabbi Gary Berenson of Congregation Etz Haim and a past event honoree. “The Holy Smokes Kosher BBQ it’s a wonderful opportunity to support this vital institution and enjoy kosher BBQ in Portland at the same time.”
