at Levey Day School, 400 Deering Ave., Portland
It’s North meets South, as good food and great friends come together for Levey Day School’s 5th annual Holy Smokes! Kosher BBQ.
This year, we will honor longtime Levey teacher Debbie Kanter. Throughout her 24 years on Levey’s faculty, Debbie has proven the wisdom of the statement that “all I really need to know, I learned in kindergarten.” Her classroom is all about kindness, creativity, respect, friendship, and a positive Judaic and secular learning environment. We encourage attendance by Levey graduates and former students and families to honor her and our school’s past, present, and future.
The event, which is open to the public, kicks off at 5pm with a cocktail reception, and features music from Portland’s own high-energy bluegrass band Jerks of Grass.
This true foodie event is Levey’s major fundraiser of the year, supporting Maine and Northern New England’s only Jewish Day School. Guests will enjoy live bluegrass music, as they enjoy kosher BBQ brisket, slow-cooked in a custom-made kosher smoker. The meal also features chicken and vegetarian entrées, all vegetarian sides, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Guests will also be invited to bid on silent auction items.
“Levey Day School has been at the front and center of Jewish education in Greater Portland for more than 60 years. The education and values that I learned there have shaped my life from first grade right up until today,” says Levey Alumnus Rabbi Gary Berenson of Congregation Etz Chaim and a past event honoree. “The Holy Smokes! Kosher BBQ is a wonderful opportunity to support this vital institution and enjoy kosher BBQ in Portland at the same time.”
